About Numicon Professional Development

Q: What is Numicon?

A: Numicon is a flexible, multi-sensory whole-school approach to teaching maths across all ability levels, using Teaching Handbooks, pupil materials and physical apparatus including the Numicon Shapes. Numicon develops mathematical conversation, reasoning and problem solving skills and creates confident mathematicians from nursery to Year 6/P7. It is created by teachers and experts in the field, based on a proven Concrete Pictorial Abstract approach.

Q: What is Numicon Online Professional Development?

A: This flexible, online course for Numicon Catch-up and Intervention is a modular course that you and your staff can access at a time and place to suit you. Split into five learning modules, this is the perfect programme to support you in identifying and addressing gaps or inconsistencies in your children’s learning, as well as correcting errors and misconceptions from time lost at school.

Q: What year groups is Numicon Online Professional Development suitable for?

A: Numicon Online Professional Development is suitable for children in Year 1/Primary 2 year up to Year 6/Primary 7. This course is suitable for Maths subject leaders, SENCOs and Year 7 Maths teachers.

Q: How do I get started?

A: We suggest starting with the first module, Introduction to Catch-up and Intervention and working through the modules in sequential order. Download the module PowerPoints to make notes as you complete the course.

Q: What’s included in my 12 months’ access?

A: Numicon Online Professional Development contains the following resources:

  • 5 modules with a quiz after each unit is completed
  • PowerPoint slides to download to follow along with the course
  • Further reading and learning materials

Q: What devices can I use with Numicon Professional Development?

A: Numicon Professional Development is designed for use on Macs and PCs running Microsoft Wordand Adobe Acrobat Reader software. The Numicon Professional Development content is also viewable on laptops running Mac OS or Windows. Numicon Professional Development resources may work on tablets but their use on these devices is not supported.

Q: I cannot see all of the content when I open a module.

Please try one of the following options:

1. Adjust the zoom settings in your browser. In Chrome, click the three dots then - (minus) on the Zoom level. 90% or 80% should show the full interactive window. You can also use Ctrl + mousewheel.
On a Mac, to increase (or decrease) the font size in any app, hold down the command *key and *press + or -.

2. Check your device’s display settings:
In *Windows *search (next to the Start button), type ‘display settings’ to open the Display settings app.
Check the settings under Scale and layout and set to 100% (recommended/default setting is 150%).

On a Mac, open System Preferences and click on Displays.
If Resolution is set to Default for display, click on Scaled.
To make more space in a window, select a larger number. To make text larger, select a smaller number for the resolution.

You can change your browser or device settings back to your preferred zoom level after you have finished with the interactive modules.

  • Minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels
